About InstantID
InstantID is an open-source research method for identity-preserving image generation with diffusion models. Give it a single reference photo of a face, and it generates new images of that same person in any style, pose, or scene, guided by text prompts. It works as a plug-and-play module on Stable Diffusion 1.5 and SDXL with no training or fine-tuning. The code is Apache 2.0 licensed, built by the InstantX Team from Xiaohongshu and Peking University. Note: the released checkpoints are for research use only.
Key Features
1. Single-Photo Identity Input
Only one reference face photo is needed. No multi-image dataset or per-person fine-tuning is required to preserve identity.
2. Training-Free Generation
The method is zero-shot: it runs a single forward inference per identity. The base model keeps full text-prompt control while holding the face.
3. SD1.5 and SDXL Compatible
Works as a module on existing Stable Diffusion 1.5 and SDXL models. It also pairs with community ControlNets like canny and depth.
4. Multiple Ways to Run It
Python inference scripts, a local Gradio demo, Hugging Face Spaces, ComfyUI nodes, and a Replicate demo are all provided.
5. Fast Inference Option
LCM-LoRA acceleration cuts generation to about ten steps. Faces stay consistent even at these low step counts.
6. Multi-Reference Support
Averaging identity embeddings across several photos improves fidelity. One photo works, but more photos help.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What do I need to run InstantID?
A GPU machine, the checkpoints from Hugging Face, InsightFace's antelopev2 face model, and an SD1.5 or SDXL base model.
How is it different from face-swap tools?
It is generative rather than a swap. That makes it more flexible for non-realistic styles and natural background blending.
Can it handle multiple people?
No. Only the largest detected face in the reference photo is used as the identity source.
Can I use the outputs commercially?
Careful: the code is Apache 2.0, but the checkpoints are research-only and the InsightFace models forbid commercial use. Check both licenses first.
Who built InstantID?
The InstantX Team (Xiaohongshu Inc. and Peking University). The method was published as a paper in January 2024.
Conclusion
InstantID is a developer and researcher tool, not a casual avatar app. If you have a GPU and want identity-consistent AI portraits without training, it is one of the strongest open options available today. The research-only checkpoint license is the main caveat to remember before you start. For experiments and papers, it is well worth studying.
